Frequently Asked Questions

Where and when does the Luminescence Children's Choir rehearse?

The Luminescence Children's Choir rehearses from 4.30 - 6.45pm on Tuesday afternoons, at Wesley Music Centre. Choristers are expected to arrive at rehearsals between 4pm and 4.20pm.

Luminescence Children's Choir members are also expected to attend at least one year of our Sight-Singing program on Saturday afternoons at Ainslie Arts Centre.

How often does the Luminescence Children's Choir perform?

The choir is typically involved in at least one performance each term, but sometimes much more! Often, we give repeat performances of the same repertoire during a term. When we tour, we perform nearly every day, or every second day. During 2019, the choir performed a total of 14 concerts, including tour performances.

What do I have to do in my audition?

Choristers will be asked to sing one short song or an excerpt of a song lasting up to two minutes from memory. You should sing with or without live accompaniment (if required, applicants must provide their own accompanist). Recorded accompaniment is not permitted.

You will also be asked to take a short aural test including melodic memory and simple sight-singing.

Do you have any programs for children younger than 10?

While we do not currently offer any permanent programs for children younger than 10, we do run holiday programs for children aged 7 - 12. Holiday programs are non-auditioned. All young singers are welcome, but places are limited.

Registrations for our next holiday program are currently open! Learn more about holiday programs here.

What costs are associated with enrolment in the choir?

Luminescence is a not-for-profit arts organisation that relies on chorister and student participation fees to operate, and to provide high quality music education to choristers.

We understand that providing opportunities can be a strain on a family's budget, and are constantly striving to make the Luminescence Children's Choir accessible for all singers who have the necessary talent and passion. For that reason, we have a number of schemes in place to offer financial assistance to families, including payment plans, significant fee discounts for second (or more) siblings from the same family, and a limited number of bursaries. Bursaries are significantly reduced fees, awarded to exceptionally talented choristers who would otherwise be unable to participate in the program.
